Throughout the chapters five through eight, the reader learns about how the ten China figures are actually to represent the living guests on Soldier Island. When a character dies, a China figure disappeares.
ReplyDeleteThe reader also learns about what relationship Vera Clathorne has with Cyril and Hugo. That being her in love with Hugo and Cyril being the kid that had drown because she wasn’t paying attention.
The reader also learns about how religious Miss Emily Brent is. For example, after she found out that Mrs. Rogers died in part II of chapter six, she said that it was “an act of god”. She also blamed the death of Beatrice Taylor on her own sins, “Her own action—her own sin—that was what drove her to it. If she had behaved like a decent modest young woman none of this would’ve happened.” It is also stated in part V of chapter five, “Anyone could see with half an eye that the woman was pious as could be—the kind that was hand and glove with parsons.”

Delete1. - In chapters five through eight, the reader learns that Vera Claythorne is in love with Hugo, who was in love with her too. Hugo could not marry Vera though because he was extremely poor and barely had enough money to support even himself. Vera still misses and thinks about Hugo, and wonders how her life would be different if things would have worked out.
ReplyDelete- During the first night of the guests' stay, they had noticed that there had been ten china figurines on the table during dinner. But, after the deaths of Anthony Marston and Mrs. Rogers, two of the figurines had disappeared, leaving only eight on the table. This relates to the fact that there are now only eight guests left.
-In these chapters I also learned more about Emily Brent. While Emily and Vera were on a walk, Emily talked to Vera about Beatrice Taylor. Beatrice was Emily's previous maid but when Emily found out about Beatrice's immoral behavior, she kicked her out of her house so that no one would ever accuse Emily of agreeing with that behavior. Beatrice ended up drowning herself and Emily seemed to not care and did not accept any responsibility for what had happened. After hearing this, it seems like Emily is a very self-centered person, only worried about herself and what others think of her.

We learned that before she came to Solider Island she was like a babysitter to a child named Cyril Hamilton. Cyril was the person " the voice" accused Vera of killing. We also know that Cyril was the nephew of a man named Hugo. Hugo and Vera loved each other but, Hugo could not marry her for he barley had enough money to support himself. Lastly, we found out that Vera is beginning to piece together that the murders follows the poem.

All of the guests see that there are 10 of them but, in chapter 6 we read Rogers and Armstrong's conversation and they realize that after 2 deaths now there are only eight china figures left. They begin to connect that every time a person dies, a chine figure will disappear.
3) Miss Emily Brent so far has not opened up to the group of guests about who she was accused of killing like the others had. In chapter 7 though, she tells Vera Claythorn about Beatrice Taylor, the women she was accused of killing. Beatrice was "in service" with her. Miss Brent was originally very fond of Beatrice. That is until Miss Brent " found out that she was what they called 'in trouble.'" When Miss Brent found out, she kicked her out of her house. When Vera asked what happened to the girl Miss Brent said later that night she threw herself into the river and drowned, she killed herself.
I like how you brought up the point that Miss Emily Brent never opened up to the rest of the guests about what she was accused of. It also seems strange that the rest of the guests really didn't question her about not opening up and explaining. Even Mr. Justice Wargrave didn't question her as much as he had questioned the others. You did a great job with your response and your answers are all supported really well. Nice job, Kenzie!

ReplyDelete2. Later the guest realize there were only eight figurines on the table, and when they arrived there were ten. The two other figurines were removed after Anthony’s death and Miss Rogers death.
3.After breakfast Emily and Vera went for a walk. On the walk Emily told Vera about Beatrice Taylor’s (her ex-maid the girl she supposedly “killed”) Emily kicked her out because she was hopeless and had no morals and life. Beatrice then killed her self by drowning in a lake. People think Emily should feel bad for it but if she would’ve grown up with better morals this never would’ve happened .
The reader learns a lot more about Vera Claythorne, the Ten China figurines, and Miss Emily Brent. She didn't think that Martson killed himself, she knew that he was in the height of his life and wouldn't do that. We learn that she loved Hugo and Cyril and that Cyril's death was because of swimming to far. Vera doesn't know what to think about all the deaths on the island. Vera also thinks that Miss Emily Brent is a terrible person. The Ten China figurines, we know now that they represent each character. Every time a character dies, one figurine is taken. Miss Emily Brent is becoming a very developed character. We know that she thinks the deaths are "God's work", especially for Mrs. Rogers death. He believes that Mrs. Rogers died because God struck her down due to all of her sin. It is revealed that Emily hated Beatrice Taylor and called her a loose girl with no morals. She said that Beatrice seemed good but really wasn't. She believes that her hatred for Beatrice didn't make her kill herself, it was her bad life that took it.

Delete1. The China figurines represent the people in the house/on the island period, as at the end of chapter 8 it told that there is only 8 on the island left with the two who died. Everytime someone dies that is when one figurine goes missing.
ReplyDelete2. Emily Brent is the old lady who reveals that she has abandoned a girl with no morals to fend for herself, this leads the girl so commit suicide and drown in a river. Emily Brent isn't fazed by her action and convinced that is was the right thing to do as in the passage it said her eyes shown self-righteousness.
3.Vera claythorn, We learn that she is very terrified of the truth of Emily Brent and that she is trying to understand what everyone means, like when the generals is talking about the end and that it's a relief she just doesn't understand whatsoever. We also get an understanding of the person who died under her care at the time was named Hugo, a boy with low stamina and wanting to swim to a certain rock far away from shore. Of course he drowned because of what Vera said in earlier chapters but it let's us relate more to the characters feelings.

ReplyDelete2. In chapter six, pg. 105-106, Mr. Rogers tells Dr.Armstrong what he notices about the little china figures. He talks of when the guests were eating dinner the fist night at Solider Island and how they noticed that there were ten figurines. Then, when he went to clear the table after dinner there were nine figurines after the death of Anthony Marston. When the morning arrived Mr. Rogers came to clear away the dishes from breakfast and he noticed only eight figurines after the death of his wife, Mrs. Rogers.
3. In chapter seven, pg. 110-111, the reader learns that Miss Emily Brent had a maid named Beatrice Taylor. Being that Beatrice was "a loose girl with no morals" as Emily Brent said, Miss Brent kicked Beatrice out the instant she heard the news. Then, because of that Beatrice took her own life by throwing herself into the river.
1. In chapter five through eight of the novel, I have learned more details about Vera Claythorn. For example I have learned that she has a crush on Hugo, but sadly he is too poor for her to marry. Vera Claythorn has also made the observation that Anthony's death was like the poem "Ten China Figures." When they first arrived there were ten of them, but after two deaths there happens to only be eight people left. I also have noticed more about Emily Brent. She tells Vera Claythorn that the girl she "killed" actually killed herself. I also found out that the lady Emily Brent "killed" was her old maid that she fired because she had no morals for life. Everyone happens to blame Emily for her death.

ReplyDeleteWe also learn things about the Ten China figurines. On the table there were ten of the figurines and now there are only eight. This makes sense because two out of the ten guests on the island died and this made it so there was only eight left. Also it goes with the poem because in the poem it says, “Ten little soldier boys going out to dine; One went and choked himself and then there were Nine. Ten little soldier boys sat up very late; One overslept himself and then there were Eight.” The poem, the guests, and the china figures all tie together.
Lastly, we learn things about Miss Emily Brent. This includes that she believes Mrs. Rogers accusation of killing someone was true and was fearful. On page 98 she says, “I think that the accusation was true. You all saw her last night. She broke down completely and fainted. The shock of having her wickedness brought home to her was too much for her. She literally died of fear.” We also learned that Beatrice Taylor was who she was accused of killing and Beatrice was in service with Miss Brent. Apparently, Emily was hard on Beatrice and that led Beatrice to kill herself. Emily does not believe it was her fault she believes Beatrice’s own actions and her own sin drove her to it.
What I learned about Vera Claythorne is that she is a complicated young lady. She fell in love with a man named Hugo. She was to be employed on the island by Mr. Owen as a secretary and she made her case known to that effect. She wanted the other visitors to feel like she had a little bit of control when in reality, her world had been shaken. This happened because of Cyril drowning. It often haunted her because it ruined her chances with Hugo. The reality was if Cyril had been born a girl, Hugo would have had a chance for a great inheritance, but when he drowned, everyone lost everything.
ReplyDeleteThe ten little china figures would be the key to the mystery surrounding why all the guests were there. When Anthony Marston died of Potassium Cyanide poisoning, the first China figurine went missing. The poem also stated that, "Ten soldier boys went out to dine; one choked his little self, and then there were nine.". These are both clear to be foreshadowing. This is relevant because with each figurine or soldier boy, it represents each guest. this also will point out what the next murder or cause of death will be. Mrs. Rogers was the next to pass by dying of an overdose of a sleeping agent, given to her by Dr. Armstrong. As the story unfolds, each guest will probably succumb to their fate by each figurine and through the poem, they just don't know who's next.
Emily Brent is a women who I would describe as a self righteous person. She liked to make examples of other people. She may be living on a fixed income because she was looking forward to a "free vacation" by U.N.O. On the recording, she was accused of killing Beatrice Taylor. She was also the only one who didn't seem scared/fearful of the recording being played in front of everyone. She was judgmental about Mrs.Rogers death saying it was her conscience that killed her. She also talked to Vera about the death of Mrs. Rogers that 'your sins will find the out". They talked about accusation and when it came to her's she said that Beatrice was "not a nice girl". She said she had loose morals because she was pregnant. She also said Beatrice committed suicide but Emily Brent could have drove her to it by being a self righteous person. She did not feel any remorse whatsoever for this young lady.
In chapters five through eight the reader learns many new things about the characters and items in the novel. For example in chapter five we learn more about Vera Claythorn, a young woman who came to the island as a secretary for Mrs. Owens. We find out that she did in fact kill a small boy, named Cyril, in her care. We find this out when she is laying in bed, wide awake, staring at the ceiling. Also in chapters five through eight we learn about the Ten China figurines. We find out that the Ten China figurines relate to the ten people on the island, and when each one dies one of the ten china figurines goes away in all of the rooms. Many of the guess have caught on to this concept. In chapter seven we learn more about Miss Emily Brent. In chapter seven she tells a story to Vera Claythorn about how this young woman, Beatrice Taylor, was in service with her and had a bad behavior so she kicked her out of her house. Later that night she committed suicide by jumping into the river. Miss Emily Brent takes no responsibility for Beatrice's action to kill her self and says it is very far fetched to accuse her of murder.

ReplyDelete2) There was ten little china figurines the first night that all the guests arrived. However, after Mr. Marston died, there were nine. Then, when Mrs. Rogers died there were 8, I'm beginning to see a trend and I'm assuming this will continue as more of the guests die.
3) Miss Emily Brent has been exposed to religion her whole life. In her opinion she is a righteous and pious woman which I believed until she told her story. I do agree with Miss Brent that it was not her fault that the young girl committed suicide. However, I think that Miss Brent was too harsh and pushed the young girl over the edge by kicking her out, causing the girl's actions.
Throughout chapters 5-8, we learned more about Vera Claythorne, the ten China figurines, and Miss Emily Brent. We learned that Vera is a bit prejudiced because she does not care about the natives. This is because she laughs about them being “our brothers”, as Miss Emily Brent said. We also learn that each time one of the characters die, one of the ten China figurines disappear. Lastly, we learn that Miss Emily Brent was supposedly to blame for driving young Beatrice Taylor to commit suicide. This was because Emily was hard on her for being a sinner and getting pregnant.
ReplyDelete1. Vera Claythorne- Throughout chapters 5 through 8, I learned a few things about Vera. One thing I learned that she is afraid of the dark (page 86). Another thing I learned is that Vera had a boy friend named Hugo who couldn’t marry her because he didn’t have enough money, who left her, right away, out of her life. I also learned that Cyril is Hugo’s little nephew (page 87 & 88). These are the things I learned about Vera.
ReplyDeleteTen China figurines- Throughout chapters 5 through 8, I’ve learned about the Ten China figurines. I’ve learned that there are 10 people and 10 figurines. In my opinion the 10 China figurines are related to the Little Soldier Boys poem. One thing I learned about the 10 China Figurines is that once one of the people dies of something, as mentioned in the Little Soldier Boys poem, there are one less figurine. For example, when Anthony Marston died, in page 81, Mr. Rogers said, “That’s a rum go! I could have sworn there were ten of them. There was also one less figurine when Mrs. Rogers died. These are the things I’ve learned about the 10 Chine Figurines.
Miss Emily Brent- Throughout chapters 5 through 8, I have learned a few things about Miss Emily Brent. One thing I’ve learned about Miss Brent is that in Dr. Armstrong’s dream, he was operating on Miss Brent but he realizes he has to kill her, Miss Brent laughed at this. Another thing I learned about Miss Brent is that she sees everything in terms of religion and believes that everyone’s stories, on pages 46 and 47, is totally bonkers except Lombard’s accusation, who killed 21 men from a native tribe. These are the things I have learned about Miss Emily Brent.

In chapters five through eight what we learn that Vera Claythorn was responsible for Cyril Hamilton's death because his uncle Hugo put Vera in charge of Cyril and she wasn't paying attention and he swam out to the big rock and he drowned. We also learn that the Ten China figurines are each representing one of the guests. We first learn abut this when Vera Claythorn gets out of bed and sees that a china figurine is missing the night that Anthony Marston died. Then when Armstrong and Lombard are searching the island and notice another china figurine is missing the day that Mrs. Rogers died. Finally we learn about Miss Emily Brent is that she believes all the accusations on all of the guests are correct and that is why Anthony Marston committed suicide and why Mrs. Rogers died because they couldn't take the reality o it all.
ReplyDelete1. In the chapters, we learn that Miss Emily Brent drove a girl that she served with to commit suicide due to Emily being hard on her and abandoned her. The girl was loose as Emily said and committed one sin, but I couldn't piece that together, but Emily said that the girl wasn't satisfied with one sin on her hands, she then took her own life by throwing herself into the river and she died. Miss Brent didn't blame herself one bit and she believes that it was all the girl's fault. She had no regrets or self-blame. As Vera said, she suddenly seemed terrible at the end of part one, chapter 7.
ReplyDeleteThe ten china figurines were also a very good story element. In the chapters, we learn that 2 of the china figures are gone after Mrs. Rogers and Anthony are dead. At dinner the night before, everyone counted the figures and there were for sure ten figures. After Mrs. Rogers died, Mr. Rogers pointed it out that 2 of the figures were missing. Through inferring, we know that each one of the figures represents one person on the island, since there are only 8 people now, 8 figures remain.
Miss Vera, we learn, is also some how guilty of the death of a small boy named Cyril. We don't exactly know how she let the boy die. It could be that she let him swim out to a rock that was far off the beach like he asked her he wanted to do, but she refused and didn't let him, or if she did it on purpose by drowning him. She was also in love with Hugo, Cyril's uncle. Or at least thought she knew by what the text says. We also learn that she could be self centered, as said at the end of chapter 5, saying dead was, for the other people and that she couldn't imagine herself wanting to die. She thought to herself that she didn't want to die.
1. We learn in these chapters a little more about Vera’s past. What we learn is that she once was in love with a man named Hugo, but could not marry him because he had no money, he just couldn’t support both of them. We also learn that Hugo was in a rich family but since his nephew was born he would not inherit the money. Vera cared for this boy and was concerned Hugo might hate him but he played with the child well. Later in chapter 7 we find she kind of sounds like a racist because she thinks, “ Our black brothers-our black brothers. Oh I’m going to laugh. I’m hysterical. I’m not myself...”.

We learn for certain now the China figures represent the guest because after the second death there are only eight figures, we noticed previously in the past chapter there was only nine figures after the first death. This time though Mr.Rogers notices this and tells Dr.Armstrong. So we know someone is removing those figures.
3. Emily Brent we learn is not a very empathetic person and is very pious. More specifically though we learn that she is not sad about the deaf a young girl who she threw out of her house because she was in trouble who then proceeded to commit suicide. As she tells the story of this death to Vera she repeatedly calls the young girl a sinner and thus feels no sadness for her death which calls into question her piuosness.
In chapter 5, i learned that Vera Claythorne used to watch a child named Cyril and she had a “ boyfriend “ named Hugo, but he just disappeared from her life. Also, i learned that each china figurine would disappear each time a character died, like there used to be 10 figurines from the start but now there are only 8 figurines since 2 characters died already. Then i read that Miss Emily Brent used to be in service with a girl named Beatrice Taylor and she didn’t really like her because she didn’t have any morals at all and she found out that she was “ in trouble “, and then one day Beatrice took her own life by throwing herself into a river. Miss Emily Brent didn’t feel guilty at all since she didn’t let the girl stay under her roof because she didn’t condone “ immortality “.
ReplyDelete1. Vera Claythorn had the job to look after a little boy who was weak. He wanted to swim out to a rock that Vera said he couldn't go to because it was too far out. One day when Vera wasn't looking he tried to swim out to the rock but in the process he drowned. Vera blamed herself for him drowning because she wasn't watching him.
ReplyDelete2. The ten china figures started to disappear when someone died. They sat on the dinning table. Since two people have died there are now only eight figures left. Some of the guests started to take notice to them but don't believe that they are really disappearing when someone dies.
3. Miss Emily Brent had hired a girl she, at first, thought to be a very nice girl. But it turned out that she had a very nasty attitude. Emily then fired her because she would cause trouble. The girl later decided to drown herself in a river nearby. Emily does not feel sorry or upset that the girl died by drowning herself.
In chapters five through eight, the reader learns that Vera Claythorne was in love with Hugo, the uncle of Cyril. Cyril was the little boy that Vera governed, and also the little boy that Vera was accused of murdering. Hugo wanted to marry Vera, but had no money to do so. Vera knew though, that if Cyril were to pass away, Hugo would inherit the family fortune. In chapters five through eight, the reader also learns that as each of the guests die, the ten little china figurines lessen. This means that every time that someone dies, someone is removing a china figure, but who? The reader also learns in chapters five through eight, that Miss Emily Brent caused Beatrice Taylor(the girl she was accused of murdering), to kill herself. The girl was working for Miss Brent, but Miss Brent began to hear rumors about the girl. These rumors caused Miss Emily Brent to have ill feelings toward the girl, so she kicked her out of her home, causing Beatrice to throw herself into the river and kill herself.

We also learn that she can become very hysterical sometimes when people are judging her. We also learn about an old lady named Miss Emily Brent. We learn very fast that she is very religious and also likes to blame people for all their actions. Miss Emily also tends to knit and spend time by herself. Finally we also learn about the ten China figurines. When the guests first arrive they notice there are ten china figurines however when some of the guests die they number of figurines drop. The number of guests alive also plays apart of the number of figurines on the table.

Also, Vera came to the conclusion that Anthony's death was related to the 'Ten Little Indians' poem. Anthony died from choking on his drink, and so did the first Indian in the poem.

3.) In chapter 7, when Emily and Vera took a walk together, Emily tells Vera the story of Beatrice Taylor. Beatrice was Emily's maid. However, Beatrice got pregnant and Emily kicked her out. Since Beatrice was anguished and had no friends to turn to, she decided to drown herself.
1. In chapter five, Vera Claythorn recalls memories of Cyril and Hugo. Vera and Hugo were in love, and wanting marriage. She thinks about the day her student, Cyril, died. Cyril was the one that the recording accused Vera of killing. I believe that Vera truly feels bad about what had happened that day, even though it was not all her fault.
ReplyDelete2. In chapters five through eight, the reader learns that everytime a resident of the island dies, a figurine disappears. When Anthony Marston died, it changed from ten indians to nine. Later, when Mrs. Rogers died, another figure was removed. The residents notice this, but aren't sure who is removing them.
3. In chapter seven, Miss Emily Brent talks to Vera about her accusation. She reveals that Beatrice Taylor killed herself after Miss Brent left her. Miss Brent is aware that her actions led the girl to kill herself, but seems not to care. This fact disturbs Vera Claythorn, which tells her that she should keep an eye on Miss Emily Brent.
Mr. Rogers finds that one of the china figurines has disappeared from the center of the dining table. Then, after Rogers's wife dies in her sleep, he finds that another one has disappeared from the table.
ReplyDeleteMs. Brent I suppose, let a woman hang herself and felt no remorse about it. Ms. Brent has tight morals, is very religious, and is not afraid to speak her mind.
Now I am gonna assume that Ms. Claythorne eventually probably got tired of Cyril being so whiney and let him swim to the rock and he died.
1. In chapters 5-8 of the reader learns a few things about Vera Claythorne. One of the most major things the reader learns is about her past. They learn that Vera had a love in her life named Hugo. Hugo was related to the person who Vera is accused of murdering, Cyril Hamilton. Towards the end of chapter five we learn that Vera and Hugo love each other but they cannot get married because Hugo does not have enough money to even make it on his own. The money he could have had belongs to his nephew, Cyril. In the book it says, “I had the chance of being a rich man to look forward to. Cyril wasn’t born until three months after Maurice died. If he’d been a girl…” (80), this is saying that because Cyril was born a male and not a female he inherited all the money and Hugo was left with nothing. This leads the reader to believe that Vera purposely let Cyril swim out to the rock, and hardly attempted to rescue him resulting in his murder. Although this is the most major things we learn about Vera we also learn that she is afraid of the dark as stated on page 79, “The light beside her was on. She was frightened of the dark.” We also learn that she usually has very good nerves when she is seen talking to Emily Brent however this time they were getting to her (79). Finally, we learn that Vera Claythorne is not ready to die when she is speaking with General Macarthur (117-118).
ReplyDelete2. In these chapters the reader finds out that the ten china figures are correlated to the deaths on the island. Several times throughout the chapters it is mentioned. The first time it is brought up is very subtle and quick. Rogers is down in the dining room staring at the table and says, “That's a rum go! I could have sworn there were ten of them." (74). Then again on page 95 and 96 when Mr. Rogers and Dr. Armstrong are talking there are only eight china figures left which fits right in with the death of Mrs. Rogers earlier that morning. The last time it was mentioned was between Philip Lombard and Dr. Armstrong when they were trying to figure out the mystery of the island. They recite the first two parts of the poem and notice how perfectly the poem fits into the deaths that have occurred and the two missing figures.
3. Finally, in these four chapters we discover a few things about Miss Emily Brent. The most major piece of information we learn is how Beatrice Taylor dies. In the book we see Emily Brent and Vera Claythorne talking when Emily brings up the fact of how Beatrice died. She tells Vera that Beatrice was her servant but as soon as she found out she was pregnant she threw her out. This ended with Beatrice drowning herself making Emily the one responsible for her death although in her eyes she believes she did nothing wrong (100). Besides this, we also learn that Emily is fond of knitting after she is seen knitting on page 115 and that General Macarthur knew Emily’s uncle, Tom from the regiment (78).

DeleteIn chapters 5-8 I learned that Vera Claythorn was in love with Cyril Hamilton's cousin, Hugo but Hugo was to poor to marry her and support both himself and her. Vera knew that if Cyril died Hugo would inherit the family fortune. Also the 10 China figurines are on the mantle and after someone on the island dies one of the figures disappears, but what is wired about is the verse of the poem and how the people died is similar. What I have learned about Emily Brent is that she is really religious and she wants everyone and everything to follow the bible but what the main thing she cares about is her own black and white definitions of morality vs. sin.
ReplyDelete1-In chapter 5, we learn a bit about the story behind the death caused by Vera Claythorn. She was a nanny for a child named Cyril. Cyril died by accident when he swam out too far at the beach. Vera had been destracted by thoughts of her lover, Hugo, and Cyril ended up drowning before she could swim out to save him. It seems to be that Vera regrets very much that she coudn't save him, and that it haunts her to this day.
ReplyDelete2-We learn that when someone from the group dies, one of the little soldier figurines disapears. The evidence of this is on page 81 where Rodgers sees that one of them has gone missing. This is shortly after Anthony Marston dies. This happens again when Rodgers finds another one missing from when his wife died.(page 106)
3-In chapter 7 on pages 95-102, we learn how Miss Emily Brent feels about what Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers were accused of in chapter 3. Emily expresses that she feels Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers killed their previous employer, though she does not know why. I think this could be due to the fact that she did kill the girl just as she was accused of in chapter 3. She didn't directly kill her but, Emily Brent tells Vera that because she was not a nice grl,"Naturally I did not keep her an hour under my roof." Emily then goes on to say that,"The abandoned creature, not content with having one single sin on her conscience, committed a still graver sin. She took her own life." So to recap what we've learned here, Emily brent believes Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers killed the elderly woman they used to work for because, she is responsible for the suicide of Beatrice Taylor.

DeleteVera was a babysitter and she couldn't save the child she was watching. Also she thought Emily Brent was a good person until Emily told her the story about Beatrice Taylor and then she was frightened by her. Vera always thinks back to the time she couldn't save Cyril from drowning.
ReplyDeleteThe Ten Figurines oddly vanish right when someone dies. People like Mr. Rogers notices that each doll goes missing when someone dies. More and more people on the island, that are left, are noticing the dolls disappearing.
Emily Brent has been accused of "killing" a girl by the name of Beatrice Taylor. Beatrice had committed suicide because of Emily's harsh words.
vera claythorne is very interested in what goes on. she likes to jump to conclusions. in the book, every time someone has an idea, she always has something to say. emily is very worrisome, in the book, everyone was up figuring out what was going on, and she said that everyone should go to bed. the ten china figurines are like the people in the house. every time someone dies, a figurine disappears.

Delete1.) What I learned about Vera Claythorne was that she really is not fond of the sea for understandable reasons. She feels responsible for Cyril's death. He kept asking her if he could go into the sea and she kept denying his request. He ended up drowning in the sea and it still haunts Vera.

3.) I discovered that Emily Brent is not the nicest person and does not feel responsible for her actions. She kicked out Beatrice Taylor for being a "loose girl with no morals." (p. 110) That caused Beatrice to proceed to take her own life. She is not sorry nor does she blame herself for this.
First the reader learns that Vera Claythorn was at one point Cyril's governess. Vera was in love with Cyril's cousin Hugo. However Hugo was to poor to support both he and Vera. She also knew that if Cyril were to die, Hugo would inherit Cyril's riches. We then learn that Vera is realizing similarities between the death of Marston and the "Ten Little Indians" poem. The poem states the following, "One choked his little self and then there were nine." This is similar to Marston's death, because the death of Marston was caused by choking on something in his drink. We later then learn that Emily Brent believes that Mrs.Rogers was the cause of Marston's death, and she died in her sleep of a guilty conscience.

The reader learns that the recent deaths of Anthony Martson and Mrs. Rodgers has something to do with the Ten China Figurines. There are ten China figurines to start with and ten people on the island. After the death of Anthony Martson, there were only nine figurines and nine people. After the death of Mrs. Rodgers, there were only eight figurines and eight people. The reader learns that Miss Emily Brent thinks people with sin deserve to die. A women was in the same service as Emily and she found out the women was sinful. Emily kicked her out and the women ended up killing herself. Emily was asked if she felt guilty for being the reason a women killed herself. She answered with "her action, her sin" and believed she got what was coming to her.

She also thought death was for other people, she could not imagine wanting to die. The ten China figures were in the middle of the dining room table. After the death of Anthony Marston, Mr. Rogers notices that there is a figure missing. Then, after the death of Mrs. Rogers, another figure is gone. The deaths in the story are represented by each of the missing China figures. The character of Miss Emily Brent we learn that she is a very religious woman and believes the death of Mrs. Rogers is an act of God. Emily Brent was sure Mrs. Rogers was supposed to die as punishment for her sins. She is a peculiar character, and seems to bother other characters. Dr. Armstrong comes to the conclusion through a dream that he must kill her.

Emily Brent- In chapters five through eight we learn about what happened with Emily and Beatrice Taylor. The recording claimed that Emily killed Beatrice. Beatrice was in service with Emily. After Emily found out stuff about Beatrice Taylor she no longer allowed her to work. With that happening Beatrice took her own life by throwing herself into a river. Emily claims she was not at fault and she did not ever feel guilty.
We learn the Vera might’ve actually really didn’t drown the child and that she doesn’t know if she believes that Mrs. Rogers was actually guilty for what they were announced to be.The ten China figurines were a symbol of each character because every time someone dies, a figurine comes up missing.We learn the Emily Brent is a strong believer that Mrs. Rogers was actually guilty and that she died because God struck her down of sin. She also believes that the girl she was accused of killing died because of her sin.

ReplyDeleteWhat we learn about the figurines is that they have begun to disappear. There were once ten, and now there are eight. This is most likely related to the real life deaths that have occurred. Characters in the story speculate this, as it is very mysterious.
What we learn about Emily Brent is that she really does believe that Mr. Rogers and his wife did away with an old lady. She also claims "Everything goes to support the idea", and mentions a woman fainting and a man dropping a coffee tray as evidence.
In chapters 5-8 we learned how the people Miss. Emily Brent and Vera Claythorn were accused of killing actually died. With Vera it was a little boy who wanted to swim so badly that despite Vera's warnings he did, and result of that he drowned this could be found on page 88. With the pious Emily Brent consumed by her religious morals abandoned a girl who needed her help the most. In result she killed herself (page 110-111). None of these women killed these people directly but had some influence in their decisions. As for the ten china figures one of them seems to be missing after Anthony Marston died (page 81).

We also learned more about Cyril and that Hugo would of been disappointed if Cyril was a girl. Also in the end of chapter five when the author wrote "She couldn't imagine wanting to die.... Death was for-the other people" Which made Vera sound like she was the killer.

What we learn about Miss Emily Brent is that she thinks that Mrs. Rogers died because of the shock of her wickedness caused her to die of fear. We also learn that Emily kicked Beatrice Taylor out of her house after finding more about her and that caused Beatrice to kill herself but Emily thinks that it was Beatrice's actions that caused her to kill herself.
