2) I believe that he created this mystery because he believed that there needed to be revenge for the deaths of the people who died because of an action that one of the ten characters did. So he created this murder plan around the poem “Ten Little Soldiers”.
3) I was surprised about the ending because the chair that Vera Claythorne had kicked over was set back to its original spot. I was also surprised when I found out that Isaac Morris has died before the guests had arrived at the island. However, I did not like how Vera just went from a strong character and shooting Philip Lombard to giving up and hanging herself when she saw the noose.

When Vera returned to her room with the remaining unbroken Indian figurine, she found a rope with a noose hanging on a hook from the ceiling and below it was "...a chair to stand upon-a chair that could be kicked away...." After seeing that, Vera gave a gasp and dropped the last little Indian figurine which broke against the fender. Vera started to move forward towards the rope and the chair, remembering how she had just shot Lombard and how she feels responsible for the death of Cyril. On page 244 it says, "That was what murder was-as easy as that! But afterwards you went on remembering...." Vera proceeded to walk to the chair like a sleepwalker, adjusted the noose around her neck, and kicked away the chair.

Epilogue:
1. Mr. U.N. Owen turned out to be Mr. Justice (Lawrence) Wargrave.
2. I believe that Wargrave created this unsolvable mystery because he was intrigued by murder and it simply fascinated him. He wanted to commit a mass murder for his own satisfaction. He also knew that the police would have a terribly hard time figuring out the who, why, and how behind this mystery.
3. I was not surprised by the ending because, to me, Wargrave seemed suspicious and guilty throughout his whole stay on Indian Island. I knew that Wargrave had to be faking his death because no one heard a gun shot before they found him "dead" and there was no possible way that any of the other guests could have killed him because they were all upstairs together when he was supposedly "shot." Also, there was no way that either Vera or Lombard could have dropped the clock on Blore's head beacuse they were together at the time of his death. That had to mean that someone (Wargrave) was faking his death and had been responsible for Blore's and all the others' deaths.

3. I was surprised by the ending because i thought Vera was the murderer. There was a lot of evidence, for example, she shot Lombard. It also seemed she was the last one to die, but in fact she wasn’t.

2. Justice Wargrave killed everyone who was beyond the reach of the law and found guilty of something in his mind. He wanted to make an unsolvable mystery because that is what he craved as a child and would most likely be remembered as a Justice who died in the most fantastic case and no one would ever suspect. He even put a note into a bottle so he felt as if it would be solvable one day but a low chance.
3. Having Wargrave as the killer the surprised me because the whole time I kept thinking he WAS the murderer but I didn't have the right clues when I read. I was thinking he wouldn't die next and that was true but I had no idea he didn't die when they actually showed. I knew Vera wasn't the murderer though and I refused to think that because of all the hints that made her innocent. So I thought, whose death was absolute death and who couldn't have died... Wargrave came to mind and that was it. I couldn't think of anyone else.

Everyone else on the island was dead except for one person and we have no idea who this person is. Then Wargrave made his confession.

2. Isaac Morris acted as Mr. U.N. Owen, it was him who explained to the people that there was some experiments going on, about some living on a 'desert island'. Isaac was mixed up in dope business and island business.
3. I was kind of surprised about the ending. I was surprised because Vera was possibly the killer of the murders on the island. We all know that she killed Lombard. Most surprising thing was that Vera wanted to hang herself because she thought that's what Hugo wanted.
The identity of Mr. U.N. Owen was not exposed in the book. I believe the book was written as a "unsolvable" mystery to keep your mind on the book going back, forth, up, and down through the book to figure out who Mr. U.N. Owen is. I was very surprised by the ending, I was surprised because I thought this book was going to be like every other book I have every read by just giving you the ending but in this we do not know who the killer is. In the ending of "And Then There Was None" it says, she, Vera, adjusted the noose round her neck and kicked away the chair. So, if Vera was the killer why would she go through all that trouble of killing everyone else and then turn around and kill herself. Therefor we do not know who the killer is, it could still be Vera, it could also be anyone else.

1. Mr.U.N. Owen turns out to be Mr.Lawrence Wargrave. The murderer of all the guests at Soldier Island including himself and Morris. We find this out at the end of his confession letter (found in a bottle at sea) when he signs his name.
2. I believe he created this "unsolvable" mystery for his own enjoyment. To satisfy his urge to kill in the most fantastic way. It says on page 208 "I recognized this as the desire of the artist to express himself!" Also so no one could interfere with his plan. So he could make the guilty suffer who didn't get punishment. 3. I was VERY surprised by the ending of the book. I would have never suspected that Wargrave would be the killer. Throughout the whole book there were little clues telling us that Wargrave was the murderer but I never picked up on them until the end when he confesses. In the book it portrays him as an innocent man trying to help the situation but now I can see he was a crazy lunatic. On pg. 206 he says, "From an early age I knew very strongly the lust to kill."

She was completely shocked and realized her guilt about killing Cyril and how much she knew that Hugo hated her after he was convinced that she purposely let him swim out there. 1.Mr. U.N.Owen is finally revealed to be Mr. Wargrave after a confession letter was found sealed in a bottle by "the master of the Emma Jane fishing trawler". That letter described how, when, and why he committed the killings.
2. In the confession letter, he said that he believed in the prosperity of the innocent, and would not kill innocent people. He claims that ever since he was little, he has had a "sadistic delight" in seeing things die or killing something himself. He said that after being judge for a long time, he finally got the urge to commit a murder himself for the thrill of it. But, he wanted to create an unsolvable murder spree because he wanted a thrill of setting it up and using his sadistic imagination. He wanted people to remember the killings to satisfy himself, after seeing and missing out on his lust to kill things for so long as it built up inside of him.
3. I was very surprised by the ending. Up until Blore's death, the 8th death, I was more than convinced that the killer was Vera because so many things seemed to fit in as I speculated and pondered over the possibilities with the way she was acting, how she was described by the other characters, how she was already fond of the poem, and what her drive was. I was able to have some thoughts on and possible explanations for so many things that just seemed too coincidental for her not to be the killer. I was very surprised because Wargrave seemed very trusting through out the story and the fact that he was presumed as the 5th person dead really took me for a loop when I read the confession letter. Through the story, I didn't have a second thought about Wargrave. He was usually the calm one to settle everyone's nerves after the incidents, like on page 203, where it says that he said calmly after an assortment of screaming from Vera, to Blore, to Armstrong, "We have still, I hope, our reasoning powers." Then he goes to try to solve the death of Emily, acting as the dependent one, which fooled me big time. But yet, when I think about it, in an unsolvable mystery, that would ironically be the actual, perfect cover. Because now that I think about it, he was usually the only calm one of the bunch and usually took charge a little too well. But yet, that fits in with him being a judge, him being able to keep calm and think rationally. A very tricky one, Wargrave. Oh well, but over all, a great story.
I don’t know what you were trying to say about the letter being sealed by “the master of the Emma Jane fishing trawler” but I think that you’re trying to say that it was sent to Scotland Yard by the master of the Emma Jane fishing trawler, which is a boat.

3.) I was surprised by the way the book ended. At the beginning of the book, I believed it was Blore because he knew everything about everyone. Then I thought that it might have been Dr. Armstrong but too many of the deaths could have been his fault and I didn't think that the book would be that obvious. So then I thought it was old Wargrave because he kept saying everyone was guilty and that no one could be considered free of guilt for any death that had occurred on the island, which confused everyone. That theory took a turn when he "died", so I went back to Armstrong, but then he died. I had no idea who it was of the final three until Blore got killed and then Vera shot Lombard. I didn't believe that Vera was the murderer and I was confused until the epilogue. Then I realized how everything made sense and that Wargrave was the killer all along.
I was also very confused on who the killer was once Wargrave died, I like how you worded your confusion. Your answers flow nicely and you have strong points to why Wargrave want to create an "unsolvable mystery." Great job!

From the hook, there was a rope tied into a noose with a chair under it that could be easily kicked away. Vera had very obviously gone mad and thought that Hugo would want her to hang herself. Also, she believed that the seaweed was Cyril's cold, wet hand. Vera then proceeded to hang herself.
ReplyDelete1) The book doesn't come out and tell us who Mr. U.N. Owen is but I am sticking with my belief that it is Justice Wargrave. The epilogue suggests that someone was still alive after Vera's suicide and I believe that Justice Wargrave faked his death.
2) I Believe that Justice Wargrave created this unsolvable mystery because he wanted to play God and he knew that the other 9 people, and himself had committed some type of murder but the law could not touch them. I think that that the old judge had gone mad in his old age and wanted to bring some crazy form of "justice".
3) I was indeed surprised by the ending of the book because the author was very good at disguising the ending of the book from the reader. At first, after Vera and Philip had discovered Armstrong's body I thought the murderer was Lombard but then he was shot so that ruled him out. All in all, I was surprised by the ending of the book.

I believe that Mr. Wargrave created the unsolvable mystery because he gained an addiction of getting people killed while he was a judge that he wanted to do something much more than just getting them killed but he wanted to kill them personally. So he created a huge plan to murder ten others in such a way that the police could not solve it.
3. I was surprised by the ending because I did not expect him as the murderer. He wanted a grand ending to his life and this "unsolvable mystery" was his way to accomplish this. He was dying due to a medical condition and wanted to die on his own terms after fulfilling his dream of committing a murder.
3. Yes I am very surprised by the ending. It is ironic that a judge who is sworn to uphold the law would want to kill people for fun. Even though the people he killed were not guilty by the law, they were guilty in his eyes. As a judge he wanted to seek justice for the wrongdoings and decided to fulfill his dream of committing a murder in the process.

After this the author writes that Vera went up to her room to find a rope hung from the celing and a chair beneath it. 3. I believe Wargrave did this for a bunch of reasons. I believe the main reson he killed these 9 people and then himsef was because he knew he was going to die soon anyway and did what he apparently had wanted to do for a long time, commit murder.

How she responds completely and absolutely surprised me, she without hesitation goes up and stands on the chair and then tightens the noose around her neck and hangs herself. 1. Mr. U.N.Owen, who I like to call Mr. Unknown, seems to be this Issac Morris character who the investigators bring up in the Epilogue. His link to the island and his mysterious deaf just before this incident seems suspicious, which the two investigators pointed out at the end. This makes sense to me and is my only explanation for who Mr. U.N. Owen is because I’m very confused about who did.
2. Mr.Owen made this unsolvable mystery probably to get justice for these people who were outside the law. This motive makes sense to me but why he picked these people I don’t know.
3. Was I surprised? I was blow out of the water confused, I thought I knew what was logical in the beginning of the book but I don’t know what I know now. First I thought it was Rogers and then I thought Armstrong but I was still wrong and I don’t have a clear answer and I can’t think of one. I’m surprised by the the ending also because Vera just walks in her room and goes and commits suicide without hesitation, I mean who could have planned for Vera to do that. Even now with the story done I’m still blown away and trying to think of who was without a doubt behind it.
I love your answer to what Vera found when she got back to her room. I felt the same confusion and I completely agree to how she felt guilt and stress.

I'm sure he created this because he was a judge and felt he had to lay down the law, and to make sure those people got what they deserved seeing as, well, once again he is a judge.
I was not really surprised, I believed that Wargrave was the killer as is evident in my response for the third assignment. As well as he just seemed kinda suspicious the whole time.
1. When Vera Claythorne returns to her room she finds a noose hanging from the hook in her ceiling and a chair to stand on under the noose (244). Upon seeing this the last line of the poem suddenly comes back to her, “He went and hanged himself and then there were none.” Following that she drops the little china figure and it shatters, meanwhile she begins to hear voices and makes her way to the noose. She gets on the chair and adjusts the noose around her neck, then kicks the chair and hangs herself (245).
ReplyDelete1. After finishing the epilogue we come to the answer that Mr. U.N. Owen is Mr. Lawrence Wargrave who we formerly knew as Justice Wargrave.
2. I believe he created this “unsolvable” mystery because he was just that mentally disturbed. His mind began to go and his actions became more aggressive. On page 263 he says, “For some years past I have been aware of a change within myself, a lessening of control - a desire to act instead of to judge. I have wanted - let me admit it frankly - to commit a murder myself.” This is is just him admitting that he is losing control and becoming more violent. I also believe he created this mystery because he had a thirst for death like he states at the bottom of 261. I think Wargrave believed he was doing this to bring justice. He thought people deserved to pay for the deaths they caused. Wargrave felt he was doing the right thing by killing them for their actions. To finish off, since Wargrave already had the urge to commit a “fantastical crime” I presume he based the murder off the poem from his childhood which made it all the more mysterious and far from ordinary.
3. I was very surprised by the ending of the book. Although I believed that Wargrave was the murderer his work was a lot more intricate than I imagined. When Wargrave “died” I thought for sure that my accusations were incorrect and that the murderer must be Lombard or Blore. I began to question everyone on the island much as Agatha Christie intended but they all seemed innocent. At the end of the final chapter I was confused to say the least and it was not until about half way through Wargrave's note that I realized he was the murderer. I was also in amazement at how thought-out and complicated his plans were. The last several deaths tied together so well. Like, for example, he planted the seaweed in Vera's room so she would scream and he would have a chance, with Armstrong's help to fake his death, then at night he met with Armstrong and pushed him into the ocean. The following day he drops the bear on Blore's head as he is coming up leaving Vera and Philip against each other after discovering Armstrong's body. Then the last part, Vera shoots Lombard and her thoughts and sleep deprivation are enough to get her to hang herself. The thing that really surprised me the most out of the whole ending can be found on the last page when the judge is explaining his death. He goes into great detail about how he pulled it off. First, he laid down on his deathbed, attaching an elastic cord to his glasses, then around the door-handle to the revolver. Next, he held the revolver with a handkerchief and pulled the trigger. His hand fell to his side making the elastic spring back and smacking the revolver onto the ground and the handkerchief as well while the elastic is left dangling from his glasses (275). I just find it incredible yet disturbing how smoothly everything worked out and how well planned it was. There was a lot more put into this plan than what meets the eye.
1.) After shooting Lombard, when Vera went back to her room with the last China figure, she finds a noose hanging from a hook on the ceiling. She then remembered the very last line of the 'Ten Little Soldiers' poem, which said, "One little soldier boy left all alone. He got married and then there were none." Since Vera had been going insane, her mind was telling her that Hugo would want her to commit suicide. She went up to the noose, adjusted it around her neck, and kicked the chair away.

2.) I believe that Judge Wargrave created this mystery to fulfill his "sadistic delight" in causing death. In the epilogue, Judge Wargrave says, "To see a wretched criminal squirming in the dock, suffering the tortures of the damned, as his doom came slowly and slowly nearer, was to me an exquisite pleasure" (286).
3.) I was surprised when finding out that Judge Wargrave was the murderer. Even though I had a prior suspicion that he was the one behind it all, there was a small feeling that Vera could have possibly been the murderer too. I was especially shocked at the very end where Wargrave wrote the letter admitting that he was the one who planned it all. It finally hit me that Wargrave was the murderer on pages 285 and 286, where Wargrave says this, "But side by side with this went a contradictory trait- a strong sense of justice". Wargrave was the only one on the island with experience as a judge, leaving him to be the only one with a strong sense of justice.
1.When Vera returned to the room she founded a rope tied with a noose with a chair underneath. With all the thoughts that were running through her head she thought that is what she was meant to do. What Hugo wanted her to do. So she followed along with the poem and she did it. She hung herself. (page 268 and 269)

2. I believe that Mr. Wargrave created this mystery for justice. He had invited people to the island that he knew were guilty, knowing that they would die on the island. Then, Isaac Morris came after and cleaned the house up, exampled by Vera's chair that was kicked over being straightened again.
3. I was suprised by the ending because I thought that Vera was the killer until the very end of the book where I discovered Wargrave actaully planned the kilings and 'killed himself' to mask that he was the killer.

(287) He also said,"...cases of deliberate murder-and all quite untouchable by the law..."(288) He wanted to commit a murder but also serve justice and so this is how he did it.
3. I was not too surprised by who the murderer was, but by how and why he had done it. He was a judge and you wouldn't expect someone who enforces the law to be the one to break it. His plan would've required a lot of foresight and he had to skillfully pick his victims. The Judge is most likely to be the killer, but is hard to pin as the murderer because he seems to be the most put together character, but openly admits to his insanity.

She began feeling crazy with all of the thoughts going through her head, she thought that Hugo had wanted her to kill her self and she loved him so she decided to do it.

3.i was stunned by the ending because the chair that Vera had used was back to its original position. I was also stunned by the fact that Issac Morris has already died before any of the guest had eve arrived. However, I did not agree with that fact that Vera had been a strong character throughout the whole story to just giving up and hanging herself.

2. It seems to me that he did this to please himself. He was interested in murder, so he came up with the perfect plan to get away with one. The police would struggle to find out who really did it, keeping Mr. Justice Wargrave out of trouble.
3. I was surprised to find that Mr. Justice Wargrave was the killer. He is a judge, his job is to help enforce the law and serve justice, not to break the law. He might have seen the murders as the right thing to do, as he thought the guests were guilty. I also did not expect Vera to hang herself, for awhile I thought she might be the killer. But we now know that all along it was Mr. Justice Wargrave who was behind everything.

She then remembers it, " One little solider boy left all alone, he went and hanged himself and then there were none." She begins to feel Hugo's presence and believes he would want her to follow through with what is set up and kill herself. So, she does.

This shows he does not feel to hesitate to kill. Also, he was a judge, his job required him to be fair. This makes him a man who is good at finding little details and catching on to things very quickly. This would help him know how to make his murders highly unlikely to solve.
3) Yes, I was surprised by the ending. Through out the whole story I was convinced Wargrave was the killer, but then in chapter 13 the author tells us he's been shot and killed. That completely threw me off. On page 223 we read that Dr. Armstrong feels his pulse and tells them that he is dead. After that I didn't have a clue to who the killer was. I was quite surprised to learn that Vera was the last "survivor".
