***Due Date is June 30, 2018 before midnight.
Read chapters 1 through 4 of the novel.
Respond to the following in complete sentences using proper grammar and spelling. Identify each response with the number of the question.
1. In chapters one
and two, the reader is introduced to each of the characters in the novel. (The
eight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Owen, and the two servants on Soldier Island.) Now that you know who each is and something
about each one’s past, which character seems the most interesting to you? Explain your choice by including support
found in these two chapters.
2. The poem,” Ten
Little Indians” is hung in all of the guests’ rooms. After each of the ten people on the island is accused
of causing someone’s death; each denies any guilt. They are the only people on the island, so
who does the voice in the recording belong to?
Interesting thought. What
happened to Anthony Marston, and how was this related to the poem?
1. Mr. Justice Wargrave is the most interesting character to me, he seems old and forgetful, "It must be seven-no, eight years ago.", as read on the last paragraph on page two. Wargrave is also very talkative, he is trying to make conversation multiple times, "Do you know this part of the world well?", was said on page twenty.
ReplyDelete2. At the end of chapter four, Anthony took a drink and choked badly. The first stanza of the poem says "Ten little soldier boy went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were Nine.", I think that this is the start of what happened in the poem happening to the people at Soldier Island.
I agree with number two because the poem describes what happened to Anthony.
DeleteThis is really good!
Delete1. My favorite character so far is Vera Claythorne who rode to the station in a third class carriage with five others(pg3) to the station where she met the others. She is a woman who replaces people if they call the agency (pg3).
ReplyDelete2.I think the voice of the recording belongs to Mr.Owens because he had Mr. Rogers and Mrs.Rogers put the record and start up the gramophone in chapter 3. Anthony Marston choked to death on the drink that was brought in and he died the same way the first indian/soldier died in the poem above the fireplace(pg 74).
I agree with both of your answers. Vera is my favorite character, and I think Mr. Owen belonged to the voice recording. Who else could of made the recording? They would have also had to say something bad about themselves in the recording to be shared with the group during dinner.
Delete1. Mr. Blore at first was very interesting in how he knew everyone who was going to Soldier Island. He had all the names written down in a little notebook. He then made up a story of who he was. But later he seems to be just another person that was called to the island under false information.
ReplyDelete2. Anthony Marston died by choking on his wine which in the poem the first death was the little soldier boy choked to death. My thought is that this is going to be a pattern in the book and they will die like the little soldier boys did.
I never really thought of how Mr. Blore knew who was going. That's a very good point.
Delete1) The character that seemed most interesting to me was Vera Claythorne. One of the reasons why I found her interesting is because she had got a flashback on the train ride, in part II of chapter one, of something that happened at the sea, “A picture rose clearly before her mind. Cyril’s head, bobbing up and down, swimming to the rock... up and down—up and down... and herself, swimming in easy practised strokes after him—cleaving her way through the water but knowing, only too surely, that she wouldn’t be in time...” Then she kept thinking of Hugo and told herself to not think of him in part II of chapter one. Also, finding out that she was the only young women at the mansion on Soldier Island intrigued me. Another thing that I found interesting about Vera Claythorne was how she was afraid of the sea, as was mentioned in part II of chapter one, but she kept looking at the sea from her room window in part V of chapter two, “She went and sat again by the window looking out to sea”
ReplyDelete2) Anthony Marston died in part IV of chapter four by choking on his drink, which is coincidental because the poem “Ten Little Soldiers” has a soldier dying in each stanza and the first stanza says, “Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self then there were Nine.” This would be related to the poem because both the soldier in the poem and Anthony Marston died of choking.
I agree with both of your answers completely. You brought up some great points about Vera.
DeleteWow! I also agree on the second answer.
Delete1. In the novel "And Then There Were None", the character Anthony Marston is most interesting to me. I am intrigued by this character because he seems like a peppy guy and full of energy. "He let in the clutch with a roar and leapt up the narrow street." He also seems to attract girls' attention because he is good looking. In the book is says "Several young women looked at him admiringly -his six feet of well-proportioned body....and intensely blue eyes".
ReplyDelete2.I think the voice in the recording belongs to Mr.Owen himself. Anthony Marston died choking on his drink because he drank too fast. Anthony Marston choking relates to the poem, "Ten Little Indians" because in the poem the first person to die, choked, and the first person to die in the book also choked.
Anthony "was" my second favorite. Then, he was the first that died.
DeleteThroughout chapters one and two Philip Lombard seems the most interesting person to me. Lombard seems very interesting in chapter one because he was the only one not receiving a letter about Indian island. He also was told not to bring anything illegal to the island. However in chapter two Lombard doesn't do much but he does admit that has traveled and had many adventures. I believe a prerecord message was made by Mr. Owen before they arrived at the island. When Anthony Marston dies I remembered how one by one they died. Plus when Anthony dies it replicated the first stanza in the poem.
ReplyDeletePhilip, in my opinion, might be a love interest for Vera.
Delete1.My favorite character in chapter one and two is Dr. Edward George Armstrong because he is gullible, and slightly timid doctor. The reason he is timid is because, he killed someone while preforming surgery(page 11). He is considered gullible because he got taken advantage of by women with money and position(page 11).
ReplyDelete2." One choked his little self and then there were nine." This relates to Anthony Marston because he died by drinking Cyanide poison(page 74).
I think Dr. Armstrong is a very smart man.
DeleteSo, I think that I forgot to answer question two. Oops.
ReplyDelete2) I believed that the voice on the recording was one of the Owens but, after reading the whole book (and forgetting to do this question) I now think otherwise. I think that it was not any of the guests at the island, nor the Owens. It was the one who planned the murderers of the guests. (He will not be named for the sake of the other students.)
Anthony Marston was murdered by choking on his drink which was what was said in the first stanza of the poem “Ten Little Soldiers”. That first stanza being, “Ten Little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self then there were Nine.”
1.I feel that the most interesting character is Mr. Bloure. This is because he had already been to the island as a boy. Also he seemed suspicious because he knew everyone who was going to be on the island. Lastly he is the most interesting because he wanted to disguise himself.
ReplyDelete2.Throughout chapters 1-4, one person has died. It was Anthony Marston that was the first to go as he had chocked to death on his drink. What happen to Anthony relates to the poem, “Ten Little Indians” because he was the first out of ten to die. In the poem, the first to die chocked to death just like Anthony.
I think it's interesting that he wants to disguise as someone else because he wanted to put a shroud of mystery around himself.
Delete1. Now that I've read something about the pasts of all the guests and of Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, I would personally have to say that Mrs. Rogers is the character that seems the most interesting to me because she doesn't talk much, and the reader isn't given much information about her or her husband. The way she acts is mysterious and the guests have started to notice it. For example, in chapter two Vera Claythorne describes Mrs. Rogers as being "a white bloodless ghost of a woman." Vera also explains that Mrs. Rogers has light eyes that shifted from place to place, how she looks frightened of her own shadow, and how she "looked like a woman who walked in mortal fear."
ReplyDelete2. I believe that the voice in the recording belongs to Mr. Owen because he probably recorded it before the servants and guests arrived, and then gave Mr. Rogers instructions to play the recording without any explanation of why.
Anthony Marston made a toast to crime and then when he took a drink he choked on his whiskey. He couldn't breathe anymore, his face turned purple, and he slid out of his chair falling dead to the ground. This situation is related to the poem because in the poem the first little indian boy dies from choking to death. I can guess that the rest of the book will continue to follow the pattern of this poem.
Wow, you did a great job with your responses! They were well written and had text evidence to support your answers.
DeleteI think Mrs. Rogers is very mysterious.
Delete1. The most interesting character in my opinion, would have to be Mr.Blore. I feel this way because when he was in the carriage with the elderly man, on his way to Soldier Island the man made an interesting statement to him. The elderly man stated, "Watch and pray. The day of judgement is at hand".Later then, following this mans' statement, Mr.BLore along with the other guests of the house listened to a very disturbing recording of each guest being charged with different indictments. This recording causes one of the guests, Mrs.Rogers, to faint. But after she had waken back up she stated "It was the voice--like a judgement--". Therefore, I feel Mr.Blore is the most interesting, because he had heard the elderly man earlier say something similar to that statement of Mrs.Rogers, so if he could find that man maybe he could have the answers that all of the guests are looking for.
ReplyDelete2. Anthony Marston was drinking his beverage, that all of the guests had been served when all of a sudden he began to choke. His face turned purple, and he gasped for air.. then he slid off of his chair, glass falling to the floor. This tragedy is related to the poem because in the poem the first stanza states, "Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self there were Nine". There are ten guests being held at Soldier Island and I feel they are mimicking the poem, and Anthony Marston is the first "little soldier boy".
1. The most interesting character in the story is easily Vera Claythorne. She gets hired by Mrs. Owen and is happy about it because of the trouble in her own recent account. She was on the train thinking about the Coroner's "inquest" and how she was acquitted of all the blame. Then she thinks of her old lover, Hugo.
ReplyDelete2. Mr. Owen does the voice in the recording after telling Mr. and Mrs. Rogers to play it. Anthony Martson dies by choking on a drink. He relates to the poem because he was the first one to die and the first soldier to die had too died by choking.
Knowing the eight characters of "And Then There Were None", the character that seems most interesting to me is Vera Claythorne. Vera Claythorne seems most interesting because she is courageous, very intelligent, and trying to escape her past. In the book on page 4, she gets complimented on her presence of mind and courage. This shows she is very intelligent and courageous. On page 5 it shows Vera is trying not to think of the kid who drowned at sea when she was distracted. This shows she is trying to escape her past. This is why Vera Claythorne is most interesting to me.
ReplyDeleteI think the voice in the recording belongs to Mr. Owens and was shipped there by Fred Narracott to give to Rodgers. Anthony Martson choked on his drink by gulping too quickly and he dropped on the floor. This relates to the poem because the first part says "One choked his little self then there were Nine" which is what happened to Anthony Martson.
1. I like Philip Lombard because he seems the smartest. The way he describes a passing girl on page 5 is an example of this.
ReplyDelete2. He was the first to die because something was slipped in his glass. The poem says "One choked his little self and then there were nine". The choking refers to Anthony choking on his drink that was poisoned.
1.) The most interesting character in my eyes is Mrs. Rogers. She seems very mysterious, as if she is hiding something big. Obviously everyone is hiding something, but she seems the most suspicious. Evidence from Chapter 2 says, "She looked like a woman who walked in mortal fear.... A little shiver passes down Vera's back. What on earth was the woman afraid of?" (31). This piece of evidence shows that others are aware of Mrs. Rogers's eeriness. Another piece of evidence from the same chapter says, "Odd creature, she looked scared to death" (38). This piece of evidence, also referring to Mrs. Rogers, is stating that she is evidently mortified. This support shown adds to the reason why I find Mrs. Rogers the most interesting character.
ReplyDelete2.) I believe that the voice in the recording could possibly be Mr. Owen. He was the one that ordered Mr. Rogers to put the record on the gramophone. Evidence to prove this claim says, "I was to put a record on the gramophone. I'd find the record in the drawer and my wife was to start the gramophone when I'd gone into the drawing room with the coffee tray" (53). These were the orders that Mr. Owen had given Mr. Rogers. Mr. Owen could have recorded the message before the guests of the island arrived. Anthony Marston died from choking on his drink. He downed the drink too quick, causing him to arrive at his death. This relates to the poem because the first line of the poem says, "Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self then there were Nine." In the poem, the first soldier died because he choked himself, as did Anthony Marston.
Though I didn't pick the same character I actually agree with you in #1. Mrs. Rodgers does seem to be hiding something, but what? Would it be at all possibe that she is the one that poisoned him.
Delete1.In these first two chapters General Macarthur is the most interesting character to me. The first thing that made me interested in him is that he’s a general and that interested me because I have an interest in the military. The second thing that made me interested was when we were first introduced to him at the end on his introduction it ended with,”He wanted to get on...”.This drew my attention because unlike the other introductions we don’t know with certainty how he was going to end his sentence. This seemed suspicious but whether or it is important it still drew my attention.
ReplyDelete2.The recording’s voice must belong to whoever is organizing all of this. It is to be believed that Anthony choked but realistically it seems he was poisoned which caused him to choke and suffocate. I think uncoincidentally, his death falls in line with the poem of the island.
1)I am interested in the character of Philip Lombard. In chapter 1, part III we are informed on page 7 that captain Lombard has done some illegal things in his past. I am hoping to find out more about this character later on in the book.
ReplyDelete2) I do not know who's voice the recording belongs to but it is not any of the guests' because they would have figured it out, it must be Mr. Owen's voice. Anthony Marston chocked and died, this is related to the first little soldier boy who choked and died as well. Also, Marston is the first of the guests to die.
1. The character who seems the most interesting to me is Vera Claythorne. I chose her because she is smart and dependable. I know this because on page 4 it says that "He (the Coroner) had even complimented her on her presence of mind and courage,". This quote is showing how Vera's intelligence is recognized by others.
ReplyDelete2. Since there are only those ten people on the island, the recording must be of someone who used to be on the island. I believe that the person who invited them to the island made it, because he knows a lot of information about the guests. Anthony Martson choked to death. This is related to the poem because the first of the Ten Little Indians to die,"choked his little self". From this I can predict that each of the guests will die following the poem.
Question One: I think that Mr. and Mrs. Rogers are interesting because they've just blindly accepted this job with no real information, which seems a little off. Second, the other eight guests have no idea of the Rogers's past, seems a bit mysterious and a little suspicious to me.
ReplyDeleteQuestion Two: Anthony Marston choked to death at the end of chapter four. It relates to the poem because the first stanza states, "Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self then there were nine" it's very self explanatory at this point, The poem says the first soldier dies of choking and Anthony dies of choking.
1. Who I find the most interesting is Vera and how she doesn't like the lake, the sound of water, and acts really tense around water and waves. On page 35, she is thinking to herself in her room before dinner in chapter 3 and she freaks out about a thought that was about drowning. I believe she did something or had a bad experience with water or a lake. She later said that she outright hated the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore of the island to Emily. I later found out I was correct.
ReplyDelete2. I would think that the recording is done by this mysterious Mr.Owen guy that is only speculated about at this point of the book. I don't believe that any of the guests would have done it because these are deep, deep secrets they are trying to hide, so why give themselves up with the rest of them? Also, no one there knows each other besides Rodgers that had the guest list, but doesn't know them on a personal level, and possibly this Mr.Owen.
Also, Anthony choked and died of I won't say what, but he relates to the poem because the first little soldier in the poem that died also choked. So if this is a trend, I believe this is how each of them will die in some sort of way related to the poem. So, the next person to die will have something to do with... oversleeping somehow? I don't know right now, but I'll figure that out later.
The most interesting character to me is Mr. Justice Wargrave. He has knows what he’s doing. He doesn’t let anyone down and he’s really nice. Even in the train, meeting the others, he was suprised but he was still remaining calm. Overall I mainly like him and find him most interesting because he is the main character and we get his perspective the most. He is good with people, too.
ReplyDelete1. The character that seems the most interesting to me is Emily Brent. I say this because of the verse that she reads from the Bible. It reads,"The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made:in the net which they hid is their own foot taken....." This is very interesting because this verse almost clues that a recent or upcoming horrific or tragic event has or will take place. Also in the beginning of chapter 2, the author gives us a thought of Miss Brent's as she judges a man when they a talking to each other.
ReplyDelete2. Anthony Marston rambles about being "all for crime" as everyone tries to prove why they are innocent from their previous accusations. As he goes to take a drink, he chokes and then as we can guess dies from choking on his drink. This is relative to the Indian poem because as the Indian boys go to dine, one of them dies from choking and that is how it comes to the being of nine Indian boys instead of ten.
In chapters one we hear about Mr. Justice Wargrave. I feel that he is one of the most interesting characters in this mystery book. I feel this way because he is interested in what his old friends are doing. I also think he is one of the most interesting because he is a retired justice of the court and I have always felt like if you worked in the court you would know a lot of things about a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI believe the voice belongs to Justice Wargave. Anthony Marston choked on his drink after he was saying he wanted to ferret out the mystery before he goes, this relates to the poem because in the first 2 stanzas of the poem it says, "ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One chocked his little self then there were Nine." So in the poem and in the story the first to die was by choking.
1. I'm interested in Justice Wargrave. He seems like the character that would know alot about what to do if anything came up in the house on Soldier island. From the passage of page 2-3, he sounds like he is already narrowing down who really bought the house. The very beginning of the book he doubted a Mr.Owens even existed. Although in chapter 2, on page 37, he seems to take a dark tone to doctors and thinks them as terrible people which makes him even more interesting to have bad and good feelings about the people in the house he will be staying in for a week or longer.
ReplyDelete2. It is too early in the book to really say but I must say Mrs. Rogers. I doubt it was the husband because he cried out innocently but passing out is easy to fake. At the age the women is, it wouldn't be hard to do that. I believe the person who brought a drink to Mr. Marston was the cause as they both died by dining. If this is true all the other deaths will be similar.
Whoever posted this response, could you PLEASE reply to this and let me know who you are? I cannot give you credit until you are identified. Thank you.
DeleteEvan bowersock again,never realized
Delete1) In chapters 1 and 2 ten main characters are introduced. Out of these ten characters I find Vera Claythorne the most interesting and in someways the most relatable. I believe this because she is a school teacher who cares about children. Also because she is grateful for what she has. In chapter 1, page 4 she thinks, "And then with a cold feeling around her heart, she thought: But I'm lucky to have this." 2) In chapter 2 a recording is played, the recording was full of statements that identify the guests as guilty for the deaths of people. I believe that the voice on the recording was Mr. Justice Wargrave. I believe this because the recording was sort of set up like a court case and Mr. Wargrave is a judge. The recording kept saying, "… your guilty … your convicted of.." Just like it would in a court case. Anthony Marston's death is related to the poem because he choked on his drink and died. This is what happened to the first " little solider" in the poem. the poem goes, "Ten little solider boys went out to dine; One chocked his little self then there were nine." Now there are nine guests left.
ReplyDelete1. The person that is the most interesting to me would be Vera Claythorne. She is the most interesting to me because on page 4-5 when it talks about Hugo and when she was swimming in the sea going after Cyril. It made me wonder more about what had happened and I wanted to learn more about her. Another reason on why she is interesting to me is because on page 34-35 when she was sitting by the window and it said "The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned...Found drowned...Drowned at sea". This made her interesting to me because she was the only character that had thoughts like the one on page 35 and it made her unique.
ReplyDelete2. I think that the voice recoding belongs to Mr. Owens because no one accused anyone else of sounding like the voice in the recording. The thing that happened to Anthony Marston was in the end of chapter four when he picked up his drink and drank it at a gulp he then choked on the drink and slid out of his chair. This is related to the poem because the poem says "Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there was nine." and this is what had happened but with Anthony Marston.
I completely agree with your view on Vera Claythorne and bring up some of the same points myself.
Delete1.) One character that interested me in this novel is Vera Claythorne, I chose her because i feel like her life is very interesting. In chapter 1, where they first introduced us to her, they told us a little about her life, the author told us that she was a school mistress and she hoped that she could get a job at a decent school, also, they mentioned someone named Hugo in the chapter and i would like to know who that person is. In the second chapter when Vera was looking out from her window, she kept on watching the ocean and she remembered something about drowning and she seemed really scared about remembering that incident, I thought that would be really interesting if the author would reveal what happened.
ReplyDelete2.) I think the voice belongs to “ Mr. Owens “. Anthony Martson chokes on his drink and he is the first guest to die, his death relates to the poem because, “ Ten little soldiers boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine. “ It’s like the poem predicted his death in a way.
1. The character that seems the most interesting to me is Mr. Justice Wargrave because it seems like he runs the whole dinner and always knows what’s going on and he is good at solving what is going on.
ReplyDelete2. The voice in the recording is a mystery to me. Anthony Marston was drinking and choked and his face turned purple and he slipped down his chair and let go of his glass. This is related to the poem because it says “Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self then there were Nine.” This shows that the first one to die in both the poem and the book, both died because they choked.
I agree with you that Mr. Justice Wargrave always seems to know exactly what he's talking about. He seems to be the head of all of the conversations between the guests and everyone looks to him to solve their issues. It almost feels like he's hiding something from all the others.
Delete1. Miss Emily Brent is most interesting to me. She catches my attention because she had received a letter from Mrs Owen that is located on page 7. It states that Miss Brent and Mrs Owen were together before. It makes me curious how they have met before they went to Belhaven Guest House years ago. It also makes me wonder what there relationship together was. This is what makes me interested in Miss Brent.
ReplyDelete2. The voice in the recording belongs to Mr Owens. While Anthony Marston was dining he had choked. This relates to the poem because in the first stanza it says "ten little solider boys went out to dine;one choked his little self and then there were nine." This is what happen to one out of the ten people on Solider Island. I predict that each harmful thing in the poem is going to happen in the story. All are going to die how the peom says.

1. The character that seems the most interesting to me is Mr. William Henry Blore. I find Mr. Blore the most interesting because he seems to have the most secrets and a different connection to Mr. Owen than the other guests do. All the other guests received an invitation to Indian Island, whereas Mr. Blore is given an order. In the first chapter Mr. Blore is on a train towards Indian Island; he is talking to himself trying to develop his back story. The entire situation that he is involved in is quite alluring. He receives a letter from who he believes to be Mr. Owen and he goes along with his request without knowing the man. One would think he would at least meet Mr. Owen before he accepted the job. In the first two chapters of the book there is significantly less information about Mr. Blore than the other characters. Looking back to the train, we really do not find out anything about Mr. Blore other than the fact that he has been hired by Mr. Owen. We do not learn about his character at all unlike the other characters which adds an element of mystery to him. In the second chapter we learn more about Mr. Blore but still not a lot. We learn that Mr. Blore has a sense of humor when he says, “Name's Davis. Natal, South Africa's my natal spot, ha ha!” (23). The fact that humor is one of the few personality traits we know about Mr. Blore makes him very intriguing. To conclude, I believe Mr. Blore is the most interesting character because of the lack of information we know about him and the odd connection he has to Mr. Owen.
ReplyDelete2. I believe the voice of the recording belongs to whoever the unknown person is. If it were one of the people attending the “party” then they should have recognized the voice but they did not which leads me to believe that the voice on the recording belongs to the unknown person previously known as Mr. Owen. What happened to Anthony Marston can be found at the very bottom of page 67. It says, “He picked up his drink and drank it off at a gulp. Too quickly, perhaps. He choked – choked badly. His face contorted, turned purple. He gasped for breath – then slid down off his chair, the glass falling from his hand.” In other words Anthony Marston choked to death on his drink. Now, if we look back at the “Ten Little Indians” poem on page 31 we see that the first line says “Ten little Indian boys went out to dine; One choked on his little self and then there were nine.” This line in the poem seems eerily similar to the events that took place. The ten little Indians, this being the ten guests, go out to dine, this would represent the guests going to dinner, one choked on his little self, this being Anthony choking on his drink, then there were nine, Anthony is dead there are only nine guests left alive. I believe that the poem is foreshadowing how each of the characters is going to die and as they try to uncover the mystery, the tragedies that occur in the poem will occur to the guests.
Interesting thought on Blore, Madison. He is another character that seems interesting to me because of your points.
DeleteI completely agree with number two on the voice recording portion.
DeleteThe guest that seems most interesting to me is Philip Lombard. He seems the most interesting because he seems very mysterious but confident. I found this on page 5&6. He is also very bold.He is bold because on page 5 he is thinking about the girl across from him and thinks " I would like to take her on.. " This makes me think he has no fears so he is bold.
ReplyDeleteThe voice belongs to Mr. Owen. Anthony Marston died by chocking to death. He is related to the story because the first soldier choked to death.
Whoever wrote this, could you Please reply to this and tell me who you are? I cannot grade the response until I have your name.
DeleteThis is mine
DeleteThanks Jayden for letting me know. Make sure to state your support on your opinions. What support is there for Mr. Lombard being mysterious, but confident?
Delete1. My favorite is Phillip Lombard. I chose him because he seems to be very focused and hard-working. On page 5 it says the following "This is business, He'd got to keep his mind on the job.". I believe this is relevant because before hand he was talking about how he was interested in a woman, but instead chose to stay focused on his work.
ReplyDelete2. Someone on the island had slipped something into Anthony's glass, the poem says the following " ten little soldier boys went out to dine, one choked his little self and then there were nine". Anthony choking on his drink refers to this part of the poem.
I think your opinion on Phillip Lombard was chosen wisely. Many people, including myself, did not think twice about his will to stay focused, instead of on the woman in front of him. Good job!
Delete1. I think the most interesting character is Mr.Justice Wargrave. He figured everything out so fast and he wasn't panicking as much as the others. He also is somewhat suspicious to me because when Dr.Armstrong asked if he knew Seton before the case he said he did not but Armstrong knew something more. He is the most interesting and mysterious person to me so far in the book
ReplyDelete2.The voice on the recording belongs to Mr.Owen. Owen could have written letters telling them to come to Soldier Island and that would be there trial for the murders. Someone else who handles trials is the judge, Justice Wargrave, so he could be Mr.Owen. But it is possible it was the Rogers because they were the only people in the house before and they could easily have recorded and set everything up. So i believe Justice Wargrave or the Rogers are on the recording. Anthony was the first to die exactly like the first soldier in the poem. In the poem it says the first soldier died from choking and Anthony died from choking on his drink and now there are nine people left. This is how he ties into the poem.
I agree with you Mariah, Wargrave did figure everything out very quicky.
Delete1. The character that seems the most interesting to me is, Emily Brent. I think she is the most interesting because at the end of chapter 2 it says "Emily Brent,..., was reading the Bible." This interests me because I am religious and so is she. Also she could be doing many different things currently but she is reading the Bible.
ReplyDelete2. What happened to Antony Marston was that he took a drink and he died. This is in relationship with the poem because in the poem the first little soldier boy dies a dinner when he choked. This is the same way that Anthony Marston died, also there was ten guests before he died and now there are nine.
ReplyDelete1: I think the most interesting character is Miss Emily Brent. In the first chapter she is sort of uptight and old fashioned, and while this could be because she is older than all of the other guests, I think there could be something more suspicious with her. At the end of chapter 2 she is reading her bible and from all the other things the author has told us about her, that was the most intriguing to me so far.
ReplyDelete2: I think the voice was pre-recorded by Mr. Owen. But I do think that there might be someone on the island who isn't supposed to be there. I think whoever it was poisoned Mr. Marston. His death relates to the poem because the first of the 10 to die in the poem choked to death, as did Mr. Marston.
1). I think that Captain Philip Lombard is the most interesting. I think this because he is a younger captain that had sailed over to Africa. He got hired to Indian Island and he does not know why but he did get paid 100 guineas. He is also accused of killing 21 people by starving them. Captain Philip did admit to there deaths but insists "Natives don't mind dying."
ReplyDelete2). I think that the voice on the recording was Mr. Owens but had Mr. Rogers play it. Anthony Marston was drinking and choked to death this relates to the poem because the 10th soldier choked himself also.
(1) The character in the "And Then There Were None" novel that is most interesting to me is Philip Lombard. One of the reasons he is interesting to me is because I find it fascinating how someone can have such little respect for human life. He show no sign of remorse for the twenty-one men he killed which points to the fact that he is a sociopath. However that is my opinion, no where in the book does it say he is a in fact a sociopath. Though when asked if he had done what was said, he grinned, you can find that on page 67. It also said that he had amusement in his eyes.
ReplyDelete(2) In the poem it mentions ten soldiers who have died. The first soldier who died, died from poison at dinner. This relates to Anthony Marston because he died while drinking alcohol that happen to be poisoned, after dinner.
I never really thought of Philip Lombard as a sociopath until you mentioned it. I like your strong point, Char.
Delete1. The character that seems the most interesting to me is Mr. Blore. I chose Mr. Blore because he had a list the names of the people going to the island and he chose South Africa as “his line” to tell the others on the island.
ReplyDelete2. I think the voice recording belongs to Mr. Owen because he had Rogers put it on.
Anthony Marston choked on his drink and in the poem the first person also choked.
I think the last person to die is the voice recorder. If they die last then they know all of the deaths and how they died. Anthony Marston is related to the poem because in the poem, “the Ten Little Indians,” the tenth indian dies because of choking and poison, and that is how Anthony Marston died. I believe that everyone is a “little indian” and they will die based on the poem.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more!
Delete1.The character that seems the most interesting to me is Miss Emily Brent. I'm most interested in her because upright and very calm.
ReplyDelete2.The voice in the recording I think belongs to Rogers. Anthony Marson died, he died the same way a child died from the poem.
Kaylyn please make sure that in your responses to the rest of the posts you include very specific details/examples from the novel, and make sure you read your responses before you post to make sure you have complete sentences.
Delete1. Phillip Lombard is my favorite because he is witty. He uses advanced words throughout the chapters
ReplyDelete2. In the poem it says “Ten little soldier boys went out to dine, one choked his little self and then there were nine” this refers to Anthony choking on his drink after something was slipped into it.
Whoever this is, could you PLEASE reply to this post and give me your name. I cannot grade the response until I know who you are. Thanks
DeleteThe most interesting character to me is Mr Owens because he sent all of the people to soldier island. He also was not at the house and told somebody to tern on the recorder and take care of the house. He also is the only one who knows there past and he never showed his face.
ReplyDeleteThe voice on the recorder was Mr Owens. Anthony Marston was the first to die because he had a drink and choked and died. This relates to the poem because the poem said that the first to die will choke his little self and die.
1. Out of all of the character introduced in chapters one and two, Vera Claythorne seemed most interesting to me. Vera Claythorne seemed most interesting to me because that she doesn’t like the sea, she is always anxious when she is out in the water, and she finds the sound of waves crashing onto rocks and onto shore disturbing. On page 35, Vera was sitting by the window looking out into the sea, she had a flashback about a memory when she drowned or perhaps a student that she had, Cyril Hamilton, who swam out too far that Vera couldn’t save Cyril in time, Cyril was mentioned on pages 47, when Vera was falsely accused of murdering Cyril, and 66. So, I found Vera interesting because she is afraid of the sea.
ReplyDelete2. After each of the 10 people hears false accusations of them murdering someone from the gramophone, the voice is believed to be Mr. Owen’s voice by those 10 people. I personally believe it is someone else’s voice, the one who is killing from the pattern of the poem. For example, Anthony Marston died by choking on his drink, as mentioned on the first stanza of the poem, “Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self then there were nine”.
It seems like my comment did not show up. This was my oririnal response.
ReplyDelete1. Out of all of the characters, Vera Claythorne is my favorite. Her past is what makes her my favorite character. While she was being distracted, she wasn't paying attention to a little boy named Cyril drowned. By the time she had tried to save him, it was too late.
2. The poem, "Ten Little Indians" ties into the story and what happened to Anthony Marston by saying "One choked his little self". This is exactly what happened. Maybe the next part of the poem will happen to someone else.
Also, I personally think the voice recording belongs to Mr. U.N. Owen, because he is the only one who could of done because all people who were on the recording were present in the room other than Mr. Rodgers.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for the mishap. It seems my comment didn't show up and I don't know why. This is what my first comment said.
ReplyDelete1.) The character that seems the most interesting to me is Mr. Blore. He is introduced in chapter 1, part VIII and he seems like a very shady character because already knows everyone else that is going to Soldier Island. On page 15, it says, "'That's the lot,' he muttered to himself. 'Emily Brent, Vera Claythorne, Dr. Armstrong, Anthony Marston, old Justice Wargrave, Philip Lombard, General Macarthur, C.M.G., D.S.O. Manservant and wife: Mr. and Mrs. Rogers.'" He also seems to be trying to hide his identity. On page 15, he also says, "'Might be a Major,' said Mr. Blore. 'No, I forgot. There's that old military gent. He'd spot me at once.'" These statements make Mr. Blore very interesting to me.
2.) I think that the voice in the recording would be whoever is going to be the last person left. They must have just distorted their voice and had planned everything else. At the end of the night, Anthony Marston had a drink and he choked and died. This seems very odd because in every person's room, they had a poem on their wall. The first stanza said, "Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were Nine." This seems very coincidental to the fact that Anthony died because he choked and died and now there are only nine people left on the island. I believe every person will die the way it says in the poem.
